Golden Globe Red Carpet Looks We Love

Less formal than the Academy Awards, and honoring accomplishments on the small screen as well as in film, the Golden Globes are one of the fashion highlights of the year. Because of the more relaxed atmosphere, stars tend to take bigger risks. The looks are less one-note than the Oscars, where most men wear traditional tuxedos and many female stars only wear ball gowns.

The 77th Golden Globes featured a variety of looks, with some stars rocking out-there frocks—Jennifer Lopez’s ribbon-adorned gown comes to mind—while others opted for a more classic aesthetic. 

The biggest trends of the night for women included bold red lips; bubblegum pink dresses like Tiffany Haddish’s; asymmetrical, one-shoulder dresses à la Michelle Williams; and corsets, which Rachel Bilson, Charleze Theron, Cate Blanchett, and Gwyneth Paltrow all incorporated into their gowns. For men, the two major trends were all-black tuxedos in the style of Johnny Cash—directors Quentin Tarentino and Bong Joon-Ho both rocked the look—and velvet suits.

Lady Gaga’s Lilac Moment

Lady Gaga wowed with pastel blue hair and a matching lilac dress. The dreamy, ultra-feminine Valentino gown was paired with a long, off-the-shoulder puff-sleeve train and a diamond pendant. The look was equal parts modern and timeless, incorporating the pastel hair trend of the past few years and giving it a princess-y twist.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw’s Yellow Jumpsuit

The British actress stunned in a gold-sequined Gucci suit and black sandals. With a flattering tomato red lip, pared-down makeup, and side-swept hair, Mbatha-Raw let her suit take center stage, and the effect was dazzling.

Priyanka Chopra’s Retro Gown

Priyanka Chopra gave a classic look a flirty, decidedly 2020 edge by pairing her Hollywood waves and bold red lip with a bubblegum pink gown. The stunning, off-the-shoulder dress accentuated her hourglass figure. The fluorescent pink hue gave the classic silhouette a modern twist, and her gorgeous waves added to the Old-Hollywood glamour of the look.

Margot Robbie’s Rooty Lob

Margot Robbie donned a Chanel jumpsuit with a floral beaded top and loose white pants. The piece was chic and fresh, and it paired perfectly with her loose, wavy blonde lob featuring dark roots. She rounded out the look with a terracotta lip, a swipe of fuchsia liner, and a hint of blush. The effect was breezy springtime perfection.

Zoe Kravitz’s Retro Polka Dots

Zoe Kravitz channeled low-maintenance retro cool with her gorgeous Saint Laurent polka dot gown. The two-piece dress featured a white skirt and a delicate, off-the-shoulder ruffled top. The polka dots, combined with her dainty pixie cut and dark red lip, hearkened back to the waifish gamine glamour of a 1960s-era Audrey Hepburn.

Cate Blanchett’s Statement Gown

One of the most unique looks of the evening was Cate Blanchett’s pastel yellow Mary Katrantzou dress. With pleated butterfly sleeves and a bodice waist, the gown had a dainty, gauzy, mermaid-like quality that was balanced out by a jeweled silver corset. Equal parts Botticelli and avant-garde, the fashion risk was a major payoff. Blanchett wore the eye-catching dress with pared-down makeup and a loose, coiffed updo.

Eddie Murphy’s Velvet Sport Coat

While many of the evening’s leading men played it safe, Eddie Murphy opted to avoid the traditional awards show uniform for men. Instead of a classic black suit and tie, he sported a chic black turtleneck under a purple velvet suit jacket. He accessorized with boxy sunglasses, a single diamond stud earring, and chunky rings. While he may have been passed over for the best actor award, he definitely won the red carpet.

Ana de Armas

The Cuban actress and breakout star of the 2019 comedy Knives Out made a stunning debut for her first Golden Globes appearance. De Armas paired a bold red lip and a sleek low ponytail with her eye-catching navy blue sequined Ralph & Russo ball gown. The strapless dress featured a full skirt, and her Tiffany diamond drop earrings and necklace matched the dress beautifully.

Scarlett Johansson

The Marriage Story actress stunned in a bright red Vera Wang gown with a plunging V-cut neckline. Paired with dewy, minimalist makeup and a hint of gloss, the nominee accessorized her look with a gorgeous BVLGARI white diamond necklace and pulled her hair back into a tight bun. The striking scarlet dress, which featured a massive bow around the hips and a long train, was one of the night’s most memorable gowns.
