The thing is, what you do at home works for you because you spend most of your time there. Your skin is used to a certain climate and routine at home. When you’re traveling, though, that routine should ebb and flow due to the different environment you’ll be exposed to.
Plus, planes, trains, cars, and basically any way to travel can wreck a person’s skin and makeup routine. Ready for some tips?

1. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Makeup on the go can be a tricky thing. But the top thing to remember is to stay hydrated. This means drinking plenty of water and using hydrating products. The changing climate and weather aren’t going to be nice to your skin, so keeping moisture in is essential.

You know the deal: Water-based toner, moisturizer, and sunscreen (I like this line). If you’re going to be near a beach or somewhere really hot, go for waterproof makeup to protect your look. But when you’re taking it off at the end of the day, remember to go for a gentle water-based formula. Gels and oils are great choices.
2. Use different makeup tools

There’s tons of products available to make sure your makeup is flawless on the go. Most makeup artists I talk to swear by using a beauty blender for your face, especially dealing with dry climates.
Makeup sponges in general are your best friend in this case. Think about it: they usually come in small, clear packs (TSA friendly!) and when you add water, they add the moisturize your face makeup needs. In addition to makeup sponges, use water-based setting spray. Not only will your look stay put forever, but it’ll add hydration back.
3. Skip powder foundation
At home, powder foundation may be your holy grail. And trust me, I get it. However, when you’re traveling, it’s best to reach for a different formula.
Why? For starters, powder foundation gets everywhere. You probably don’t want that in your travel bag. Second, the finish for powder is matte, which is great depending on your skin type…except when you’re traveling. Dry skin affects everyone on the go, and dry on top of dry does settle well.

4. Be wary of layering products
The makeup wearers who prefer a full beat-down aren’t going to like this tip. But a full beat at the end of the night can be a hassle to take off. Plus, how many times have you done a complicated skincare routine and still couldn’t manage to get all your makeup off?
Nobody wants to deal with that on vacation.
Skip all the endless skincare, lighten your carry-on, and don’t layer makeup. If you need any more reason, we haven’t even gone into what a lot of makeup, different climates, and long days do to your pores. Your skin will definitely thank you in the long run.
5. Take note of your primer
Do you use primer in your makeup routine? If so, then take a look at your favorite primer. Before you travel, it might be time to switch.
Primer is used as the base of a foundation routine. It preps your skin for face makeup and targets specific concerns for flawless application. Sounds great, right? Primers usually are. The one downside about them, however, is that they can dry chalky or flaky.
As we’ve discussed, dry finishes are not going to work. So this traveling beauty tip involves checking up on your primer. If you have a formula that has a less-than-moisturizing application or finish, try one that does when you’re away.
